The 2021 RHS Botanical Art and Photography show is on at the Saatchi Gallery in London until 3rd October 2021, 10.00 – 18.00 daily and 21.00 on Thursdays. There were 6 SBA Fellows among the 15 Botanical Art exhibitors, with a fabulous range of work. All 6 were awarded a medal: Pauleen Trim – Gold Medal for her exhibit ”Native British Deciduous Trees Featuring Galls” and also The Best Botanical Artwork award for her painting Fraxinus excelsior (Ash Tree) Toni Dade – Gold Medal for her exhibit “Pomegranate Punica granatum” Mariko Aikawa – Gold Medal for her exhibit “Tillandsia” Guy William Eves – Silver-Gilt Medal for his exhibit “For The Love Of Ferns” Jarnie Godwin – Silver-Gilt Medal for her exhibit “Echinacea: Life Through Colour”… Read more

RHS Show 2021
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Saatchi Gallery have partnered to present the return of the RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show in 2021. Running parallel to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in September, it will feature more than 200 of the best botanical artwork and garden photography by 34 global artists in celebration of these technical art forms.2021’s show will include an array of intricate and scientifically accurate botanical illustrations by 15 artists and portfolio collections from 19 photographers that will all compete for an RHS Medal – Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver, or Bronze. The RHS, like so many organisations and charities everywhere are having to face hardtimes, closing up venues, cancelling shows and adhering to strict guidelines. But looking forward, hopefully the London RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show, in April 2021, will be able to still go ahead at another venue in London. The RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show is finally on! Yesterday was the preview of the show, and we were blown away by the quality of the work! Congratulations to SBA Members Karen Bailey (awarded Silver-Gilt for her Gentiana paintings), Caroline Jackson-Houston (awarded Silver-Gilt for her paintings of Mycorrhizal fungi of the Thames Valley Area), Nina Marks (awarded Silver-Gilt for her Gin- flavoured Botanicals) and Janet Pope (awarded Silver for her Solanum tuberosum paintings). A Gold medal went to the Russian Botanical Artists Group Exhibit. We were delighted to see some of our Plantae exhibitors amongst the group, and look forward to welcoming a few to the SBA as Fellow Members in the near future. The Gold Medal Winners By Charlotte Brooks The New Book from the RHS, “Botanical Illustration-The Gold medal winners”, is a superb book that contains a whole host of artwork representing some of the best Botanical illustrations since the Lindley Library began their collection. It starts with a comprehensive introduction on how the collection began and the journey through the years on how it has developed and changed and was at one point nearly lost. As a botanical painter myself, this history and collection was extremely interesting, as it shows how illustration has moved on and yet has maintained the gravitas of its historical roots.
