The RHS Botanical Art and Photography Show is finally on! Yesterday was the preview of the show, and we were blown away by the quality of the work! Congratulations to SBA Members Karen Bailey (awarded Silver-Gilt for her Gentiana paintings), Caroline Jackson-Houston (awarded Silver-Gilt for her paintings of Mycorrhizal fungi of the Thames Valley Area), Nina Marks (awarded Silver-Gilt for her Gin- flavoured Botanicals) and Janet Pope (awarded Silver for her Solanum tuberosum paintings). A Gold medal went to the Russian Botanical Artists Group Exhibit. The Gold Medal Winners By Charlotte Brooks The New Book from the RHS, “Botanical Illustration-The Gold medal winners”, is a superb book that contains a whole host of artwork representing some of the best Botanical illustrations since the Lindley Library began their collection. It starts with a comprehensive introduction on how the collection began and the journey through the years on how it has developed and changed and was at one point nearly lost. As a botanical painter myself, this history and collection was extremely interesting, as it shows how illustration has moved on and yet has maintained the gravitas of its historical roots. There will be an exhibition at the Lindley Library in London opening on 20th May. SBA member Caroline Jackson-Houlston is delighted to report that one of the Gold Medal winning pictures purchased from her by the RHS at Malvern Show in 2018 is going to be used to advertise the exhibition in the Library this summer. An exhibition coming up at the Lindley Library Monday 7th January – Friday 15th February 2019 Handle with Care: Preserving our Gardening Heritage Exhibition at the RHS Lindley Library, London Mon-Fri 10am-5pm Exploring RHS Libraries collections, this exhibition describes how we protect and conserve the precious materials that have been entrusted to our care. The display presents the outcome of work made possible as a result of our most recent fundraising campaign: showing letters of the 19th century plant collector Karl Theodor Hartweg, and will also feature items from the Special Collections that we will be conserving as part of our ongoing work to protect the treasures of the RHS Lindley Library. Congratulations go to all the artists winning medals at the RHS art and plant fair at the RHS halls in London. Out of the SBA members there was Simon Williams, DLDC course director who won a gold medal for his ‘Nepenthes’ collection. Christina Hart-Davies won a gold medal also for her paintings of ‘Common British Corticolous Lichens’ Sue Wickison won a silver-gilt for her paintings of ‘Plants of the Holy Qur’an‘ Maggie Niagassas, an SBA graduate won a silver gilt for her theme of ‘the plants of the Mediterranean’. Michael Lakin won a silver for his paintings on the theme of ‘The Life Cycle of Edible legumes‘.
