Biography

Susan is originally from Surrey, but now lives, works and gardens in Cornwall. She studied fine art at Art School, and has been a professional artist ever since, working in various media. Her love of plants has led her to specialize in botanical painting and drawing.

Susan is inspired by nature, also painting feathers, bones, eggs, pebbles and many other natural history finds, as well as plants. She loves colour, line and form, and enjoys various media, particularly watercolour and coloured pencil. She believes in working direct from life whenever possible, and enjoys sketching outside.

Susan is an accomplished facsimile painter, having worked by recommendation of the National Portrait Gallery, she has been commissioned by British Rail, Tescos, McMullen’s Brewery, the Law Society, the Police College, and many private and commercial clients, for a variety of figurative work, much of it plant based, and some very large scale.

For several years Susan worked as a scientific illustrator at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, where this prestigious work involved dissecting herbarium specimens. She has painted prize winning orchids for the RHS, and has RHS medals including gold. She has worked in commercial illustration and has illustrated many books, including eleven by Alan Titchmarsh. Susan enjoys teaching and is a tutor on the SBA Diploma course; she gives workshops and runs short courses in the West Country and abroad. Susan exhibits in Cornwall, London and abroad, and has work in collections worldwide, she has had several solo exhibitions.
