Biography
Plants have been Roger’s unfailing interest through his life, from a very young boy exploring the water plants of Broadland to a degree in Botany, a career in teaching biology and finally taking up botanical illustration.
He started painting as a teenager but never found time to explore the process until he retired in 2000. He decided to amalgamate his understanding of plants with his interest in painting by botanical illustration.
He became a member of the SBA in 2005 and started running local classes in botanical work. The classes flourished and developed into a group of painters who still meet regularly. Missenden Abbey started to employ him as a teacher of botanical art and he still runs course regularly there. He also runs workshops for art societies and groups in southern England on watercolour and coloured pencil plant illustration.
Lately he has become a member of the Institute of Analytical Botanical Illustrators and currently acts as their education co-ordinator, mainly providing botanical information to artists wishing to understand their subject material.
