Robert McNeill

Robert is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art / Edinburgh University, Scotland, where he was a student of the Drawing and Painting School. On completion of his post graduate studies at Edinburgh he never ceased painting, followed a teaching career for thirty-one years, and took early retirement in 2011. He continued to paint but changed genre almost overnight, moving from complete abstraction to botanical painting. In 2015 he was made a full member of the Society of Botanical Artists.

Robert has years of experience as an abstract artist, but never indulged in slick superficial methodologies. His botanical watercolours are no exception and bear witness to a creative process that is strongly grounded in painterly qualities that are always in a state of constant flux to meet the demands and challenges of his botanical subjects.

He has work in the collection of Dr Shirley Sherwood, OBE, the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and various private collections.
In 2013 he gained a Certificate of Botanical Merit, the Suzanne Lucas Memorial Award and the People’s Choice Award.
His painting Pinus wallichiana was selected by the Fundación Cidade da Cultura de Galicia, Monte Gaiás, Santiago de Compostela, to be included in the prestigious “Auga Doce” / Fresh Water, exhibition 2014.
His painting Abies koreana, won the Jurors Award when exhibited as part of the Out of the Woods / Out on a Limb exhibition at the Foundry Art Centre, St Charles, Missouri, in 2018.
