Mary Crabtree

Living in Colorado, USA, and previously a virologist, Mary began studying botanical illustration in 2017 and earned the Denver Botanic Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate with Distinction in 2021. She is currently studying in the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh Diploma Online course and has been accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society to exhibit work at a future RHS show. In addition to SBA Mary is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists, and the Association of Botanical Artists.

Mary is fascinated by the intricacies of plants, the interplay of form and function. Working in colored pencil, watercolor and graphite, she enjoys illustrating native plants/wildflowers that have a rugged personality she appreciates and strives to depict. Through her artwork Mary hopes to convey the value of these flora in our planet’s ecosystems, focusing attention on the crucial interdependencies of nature.

Mary’s work has been exhibited at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK (ABBA, digital exhibition), Wave Hill, Bronx, NY, (ASBA 23rd International), Denver Botanic Gardens, CO, University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, CO (RMSBA), and Garden of the Gods, CO (RMSBA). Her work has been selected for SBA’s Plantae 2022. Additionally, her illustrations are in use on interpretive signs by the Denver Mountain Parks Division, CO.
