I have been working as a professional artist for over 30 years. After graduating with Honours from Reigate School of Art and Design, I worked as a calligrapher and heraldic artist for ten years; my clients included the College of Arms in London, the Inns of Court and the London Livery Companies, plus many businesses and corporations as well as private individuals. My heraldic work was mainly in gouache and oils on calfskin, canvas and silk. My love for plants and gardening and watching the effects of the changing seasons, together with seeing the range of plants and fruits when travelling drew me to botanical illustration.
I enjoy drawing and painting plants and discovering the finer details of their leaves, flowers and fruits. My botanical work is primarily in watercolour, although I am particularly interested in exploring the use of different media and supports for my work. I am particularly inspired by the early illuminated manuscripts and by Dutch 17th century still life paintings their realism vibrancy of colour and sense of light.
I have a RHS Silver Medal for a study of clematis and a special award from the SBA Diploma. I teach painting and drawing classes and am a tutor on the SBA Distance Learning Course. My work has been exhibited at many exhibitions including the annual exhibitions for the SBA, the Gloucestershire Society for Botanical Illustration and in exhibitions by the Chelsea Physic Garden and Palmergarten. I am a Fellow of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium and the Oxford Botanical Garden Florilegium and a Freeman of the of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers. My work has been reproduced in Botanical Illustration from Chelsea Physic Garden and examples of my work can be seen on my website: www.botanical-artist.co.uk
