Biography
I have been working as a professional artist for over 35 years. After graduating with Honours from Reigate School of Art and Design, I worked as a freelance Heraldic Artist, Illustrator and Calligrapher for more than ten years. My clients included the College of Arms in London, the Inns of Court and the London Livery Companies, plus many businesses and corporations as well as private individuals. Examples of my work hang in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle; Westminster Abbey and the Inns of Court in London and is included in many private collections and publications.
My love of plants and the natural world drew me to botanical illustration although I still like to paint other subjects including landscapes. My heraldic and illumination work was mainly in gouache and oils on calfskin, canvas and silk, whilst my botanical work is primarily in watercolour. I also however love exploring the use of different media specifically graphite; the medieval technique of metalpoint; and painting on calfskin vellum and the subtlety of line and texture these media can produce.
My work has been exhibited at many exhibitions including the 15th International exhibition of the Hunt institute for Botanical Documentation and the SBA annual exhibitions. I am a fellow of the SBA and the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium and a Freeman of the Worshipful company of Painter Stainers.
