Julie Holcombe

Biography

Julie Holcombe (formerly Nettleton) has been a botanical artist since 2002.  Up until then her career was in interior design.  During those years she was greatly inspired by the wonderful textile designs of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement as well as the architect Frank Lloyd Wright.  Wright’s love of the natural world wove its way through all his work with unique and innovative interpretation.

Julie’s art focuses on Australian native plants endemic to the Sydney region.  She is inspired to highlight the unique species that can still be found there, albeit in ever diminishing area.

Recent exhibitions include The Shirley Sherwood Collection: Modern Masterpieces of Botanical Art, Kew London;  The Florilegium Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney: Celebrating 200 Years at the Museum of Sydney and the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew; Botanica at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and the Art Gallery of NSW Members Lounge.

Julie’s work is held in The Florilegium Collection Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, Shirley Sherwood Collection London, the State Botanical Collection at the National Herbarium of Victoria, and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, USA.   She was awarded a Gold Medal and Best Painting In Show at the RHS London Botanical Art Show in 2016.
