Joanna Thomas

Joanna Thomas is an Australian botanical artist and qualified horticulturist, who channels her creative energy through the medium of graphite and colour pencils. Having served nearly two decades as a secondary school teacher, imparting knowledge in visual art, science, and horticulture, Joanna found herself yearning for a pursuit that would seamlessly blend her passion for both art and nature while allowing her to remain close to her family.

Drawn by nostalgia for her mother’s gardens and the lush subtropical flora of her childhood, Joanna’s journey into botanical art gained momentum upon acquiring her first home. Initially exploring watercolour, she found her true calling in the precision and depth afforded by graphite pencil and the paper stump. Recently awarded a grant by the Shoalhaven Arts Board, Joanna has delved into the realm of colour pencil, expanding her artistic repertoire.

An active member of the Botanical Art Society of Australia (BASA), Joanna showcases her work regularly, earning accolades such as a highly commended award at the 2022 Melbourne Garden and Flower Show exhibition. She also participates in exhibitions hosted by the Bowral Botanical Art Group and other open forums. In addition to her exhibitions, Joanna shares her botanical imagery through prints and merchandise, available on her website and at selected retail collective stores, ensuring her artistry reaches a wider audience.
