I have been painting for as far back as I can remember but my interest in flowers began in the early 1980s when I joined the design team at the Royal Albert division of Royal Doulton China in Staffordshire. This was my first encounter with painting flowers and where I learned to paint intricate designs directly onto china for prototype pattern designs.
In the late 1980s I moved to Scotland with my family where I worked as a freelance artist and illustrator. In 2002 I returned to flower painting and was greatly encouraged by James White, Curator at the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation, when he invited me to take part in their 12th International Exhibition in 2007. I now have work in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute.
To improve my understanding of botany I enrolled at the University of Aberdeen for a BSc(Hons) in Biology and during that time I had the good fortune to be awarded a scholarship to work with professional gardeners in the University's Cruickshank Botanic Garden. Following my graduation in 2006, I worked in education for a number of years but began to specialize in botanical painting, participating in RHS shows and the SBA annual exhibitions.
In 2008 I undertook the SBA Distance Learning Diploma course and, two years later, was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit at the SBA Silver Jubilee Exhibition for my graphite work. In March 2011 I graduated from the SBA Distance Learning Diploma in Botanical Art with distinction. In March 2012 I was elected as a full member of the SBA. I am currently working full time as a botanical artist.
