Billy Showell is a botanical artist and illustrator. She has exhibited her work across Britain and is in constant demand for private commissions. With her eye for detail and creative
compositions, her pictures are both beautiful and botanically accurate. Her illustrative cartoons are also growing in demand for logos, magazines, cards and for individual commissions.
Billy’s first book Watercolour Flower Portraits was published in 2006 and has been a best
seller since its launch, with fantastic reviews and now published in five languages including
Russian. She was inspired to write the sister book Watercolour Portraits of Fruits and
Vegetables which will be published in time for Christmas 2008.
Billy says that her work, although botanically illustrative, is modern in its approach and is primarily about creating an arrangement that symbolises the simplicity and beauty of the natural world. Design and composition are therefore as important to her as the true colours and shapes of the subjects. She is always searching to try new avenues with her painting and constantly pushing herself to create new and beautiful paintings. Botanical painting has allowed her to continue her love of design and she is always amazed at the kind welcome her work receives from Botanical Illustrators. She truly adores flowers and is now searching for new plants to portray to broaden her knowledge of the subject. She feels that watercolour painting allows one to work fast and from life, to depict shadow and individuality within the plants and to set up studio wherever you are. She runs many workshops throughout the
year and loves to see students develop and create the pictures they truly enjoy.
