Christopher Ryland has specialised in flower painting since the early 1980's. In his flower paintings he has gradually evolved a unique personal style, combining often bold imagery and striking use of colour with great sensitivity. Some of his paintings introduce a human presence or a glimpse of landscape into the intimate floral environment.
Christopher graduated from Goldsmith's College in London in 1972. During the 1970s he worked on a series of public and environmental arts projects, painting large-scale murals.
In 1995 Christopher was elected a member of The Society of Botanical Artists and in 2001 won the Founder President's Award at the annual exhibition in Westminster. He has had several solo exhibitions in London and in East Anglia where he lives, most recently at The John Russell Gallery in Ipswich in 2006. Mixed exhibitions have included The Barbican, The Royal Horticultural Society, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and The Medici Galleries.
Many of his Christopher's images have been published as cards or prints by companies such as Rosenstiel's, Medici, Hallmark, Paperlink and Simon Elvin, and he has completed major commissions for Wedgewood and Royal Doulton. Examples of his work are in the Bridgeman Art Library and he was recently the subject of an article in Country Life magazine.
Christopher also teaches a variety of Art courses including drawing, flower painting, creative watercolour and landscape painting from his studio in Sudbury, Suffolk. (See Members' Courses)
