Biography

Australian botanical artist Gabrielle Pragasam began her journey into art in 2001, undertaking classes at the Watercolour Society of Queensland. Throughout that time, she acquired her love for detail and a fascination with the beauty of nature.  She went on to complete advanced training at the Margaret Saul School of Botanic Art in 2003 where she honed her skills in watercolour, graphite, colour pencil, and ink.

Gabrielle’s work has been publicly acquired through annual group exhibitions with both the Watercolour Society of Queensland and the Botanical Artists’ Society of Queensland.  Since 2001, she has exhibited across the state’s capital city of Brisbane in venues such as the Watercolour Society of Queensland galleries, Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens Herbarium, Indooroopilly Library, and the Royal Queensland Show.

Gabrielle’s aim in painting is to create a scientifically accurate collectible art piece that is more than purely a reference illustration.  She selects as her subjects florally rich or picturesque plants, striving for a depiction that charms the eye.  The result is a portrayal of nature that expresses the enjoyment of the artist in its execution and allows the viewer also to enjoy it as both a painting and a botanical study. Gabrielle believes flowers particularly lend themselves to artwork, since much of the fine composition has already been created by the greater Artist.  She hopes her representation of that natural beauty will reflect on the more perfect design in nature and the most perfect One who fashioned it.

Gabrielle is a member of the Botanical Artists’ Society of Queensland and the Botanical Art Society of Australia. She holds a degree in communication from Griffith University and currently works in the media industry.  Her other interests include classical music, handicrafts, and literature.
