Biography

Annie was brought up on a farm adjacent to the Thames estuary in Kent where her love of the native British flora as well as of Gardening was nurtured.  On leaving school she read Botany at Bristol University.  The botany course involved close observation of plants and detailed drawing of all parts of plants, invaluable skills for her later career.

After working for a Bank and bringing up children, Annie began to take her flower drawing more seriously and started to attend the Botanical Illustration course at Flatford Mill where she developed her watercolour skills.

Annie began to exhibit her work in exhibitions local to her home near Bristol and then in 1993 she showed her work for the first time at the Royal Horticultural Society in Vincent Square, Westminster.  The RHS has, to date awarded Annie three Silver-Gilt medals.  In 2002 she was elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists.  She is also an active member of the Society of Floral Painters.  Much of her work has been reproduced as limited edition prints and as greetings cards.

Alongside her work as an artist Annie is increasingly in demand as a teacher, tutoring courses for the Field Studies Council and running highly successful courses annually in Wales and in Austria.  Her two-day workshops in her own home are always very popular as are the workshops she runs each winter in a local hall.

One of the most interesting aspects of her work is the involvement with fellow artists working in the National Botanic Garden of Wales and also at the RHS gardens at Rosemoor.  In both these places the artists meet regularly to illustrate plants grown in the gardens, the paintings then being put on display in each institution.

Although she enjoys all aspects of botanical illustration, it is the native flora which is Annie’s first love.  Involvement with a conservation project on a local road verge has led to her recording the plants through her art, this being an ongoing project to keep her occupied and happy for several years to come.
