Biography

As a child Margaret was always painting and drawing and it was no surprise to her parents that Margaret went to Reigate School of Art where she studied Heraldic Art  Calligraphy and  Illumination, gaining a Higher Diploma in Art and Design in 1981.

After qualifying, Margaret worked for a range of clients including: the College of Arms in London, the Inns of Court, and London Livery Companies.  Her work for the College of Arms included painting the banners and crests for the Order of the Garter at Windsor and for the Order of the Bath at Westminster Abbey.  Her work involved using a range of media including oils, gouache and watercolour on various grounds such as vellum, canvas, silk, wood and paper.  This gave her a breadth of experience which she has continued to draw upon and expand in her current work.  Her work was hung at: the  Society of Graphic Artists in London; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the London  Guilds; galleries in Surrey, Sussex, Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

Margaret’s daughter was born in 1991 and whilst bringing up her daughter she continued to carry out small commissions and taught calligraphy and watercolour classes.

Margaret has always had a love of gardens and flowers and while bringing up her daughter she became interested in botanical illustration and its history.  She started to  produce botanical illustrations and in 2003 was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society Silver medal for a series of paintings of clematis.

In 2007 she completed the two year Society of Botanical Artists Distance Learning Diploma Course for which she received a Distinction and a Special Award for Excellence.   She was elected a full Member of the Society in 2008.

Margaret enjoys experimenting with different media.  At present she is working with watercolour and pencil and is looking at ways of combining her experience in her earlier work in other media with her recent experience in botanical illustration.
