Biography

Sheila trained as a  teacher of  Domestic Science and  Textiles in the 60's  and  has taught

these subjects in Secondary schools until her retirement in 2001. Her love of plants and flowers was much influenced by her mother`s passion for gardening. Only when her family had grown up and she retired from teaching did she have time to pursue this interest.

She received a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from Leicester College in 2004 and has followed several short courses, including two with Ann-Marie Evans and Jenny Phillips at The Chelsea Physic Garden.

In 2004, Sheila was invited to join the Leicestershire Society of Botanical Illustrators and has successfully submitted paintings for several exhibitions including Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Rutland County Museum, Burghley House, Stamford and the R.H.S. London, where her painting was part of an exhibition awarded a Silver Medal for 'Plants grown from Heritage Seeds'.

In Nov.2006 Sheila exhibited thirteen pictures 'Common fungi in watercolour and pencil' at the R.H.S. London Show and was awarded a Silver Medal. Three paintings were subsequently exported to Manhattan USA  to a purchaser at the exhibition.

In 2003, 2006 and 2007 she exhibited work at the SBA open exhibition in London and in 2007 was awarded Associate Membership and received a Certificate of Botanical Merit.

Sheila is particularly interested in producing work in mixed media, especially watercolour and pencil, as well as showing plants in their natural environments. She has recently enjoyed her research on fungi and her paintings of these have been particularly successful. She also produces cards and bookmarks depicting her work – which she sells commercially and for charity.
