Biography

Gaynor comes from the Midlands, but lived 25 years of her adult life in Norway. As a young adult the choice was Art School or Nursing. Nursing won at the time, but she still kept up her artistic interests.

Whilst in Norway, Gaynor developed her drawing and painting skills, leaning towards ornithology. At this time she worked with Stavanger Museum who lent her ‘skins’ to enable her to portray bird plumage in detail. Eventually Gaynor exhibited in several exhibitions in Norway through the 1970s and 80s, in Los Angeles in 1984, and with her own exhibition in Stavanger in 1990. She has taught in many Norwegian towns, from Kristiansund in the North to  Kristiansand in the South. In 1984, whilst in Los Angeles for an exhibition, she was asked to take classes there too.

She moved back to the England in 1996 and now lives in West Sussex. Here, in 2005 she became interested in botanical art, working mostly with watercolour. She also enjoys the results she gets when painting with coloured pencils.

Gaynor was accepted for the Society of Botanical Artists (SBA) distance learning course, completing this in Spring 2009 with a distinction. At the same time, she entered pictures for the SBA annual open exhibition and had all accepted over the required three year period to obtain full membership. For the 2009 exhibition she was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit for “The Bosham Hoe Celariac”.

Fixing the image of a beautiful or interesting object of botanical interest onto an archival paper gives Gaynor a great deal of pleasure. She feels it is important to be able to combine looking, seeing and then registering the detail into a harmonic composition with watercolour, coloured pencil or graphite. This combination shows in the same picture the life, delicacy or solidity and detail of the subject matter, which is difficult if not impossible to convey with other media.

Gaynor delights in a seemingly unending supply of botanical subjects and enjoys the challenge of portraying these in a way that encourages others to look and see what is around them.

Students at Gaynor’s botanical art classes have been amazed by what they have been able to see after learning how to look and what to look for. They feel that this has helped them to improve their artistic skills, whether new beginners or experienced artists.
