Elisabeth Blake Dip AD SBA SFP
Biography
Elisabeth’s great grandfather was the postcard artist, Walter Hayward-Young (“Jotter”). Of his six children four became artists, one of whom was her grandmother. As a child Elisabeth loved watching her paint and had her own paint box from an early age. Her father was in the Services and they moved frequently so she attended many different schools with a wide variety of art teachers. Her love of detail and strong colour stems from the intricately patterned Indian style of painting that she learnt at a Malaysian convent school in Penang.
After a foundation course at Luton School of Art, Elisabeth attended Goldsmith’s College where she took a Diploma in Art and Design in Fine Art, graduating in 1967. A keen interest in plants and gardening led her to specialise in painting flowers and she tries to communicate the pleasure and enjoyment that they give her. She works directly in watercolour without any preliminary pencil drawing and prefers to let a picture develop rather than plan it beforehand.
Elisabeth became a member of the Society of Floral Painters (SFP) in 1998. She has exhibited regularly with them and has had work in their exhibitions at Mottisfont Rose Garden, Jersey, Salisbury, Ventnor Botanic Gardens and Hillier’s Arboretum. She has recently taken part in the Winter Blooms’ Exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery. She first exhibited at the Society of Botanical Artists’ Open Exhibition in 2001 and was elected an Associate Member in 2006, followed by Full Membership in 2007. She is available for commissions.
Elisabeth’s husband works with her, marketing a range of floral cards and prints that have been produced from her paintings. They live in Titchfield on the Hampshire coast and take an active part in village life.
